General
Q. How fast will file transfers occur?
A. Best theoretical speeds are here. Actual performance will be slightly
less than this value depending upon your computer speed, and internet bottlenecks. In general,
RatooiFTP is faster than Ratooi due to no encryption in RatooiFTP.
Q. How do I determine how much space I have used on my Ratooi data store
A. The amount of space used is shown in a file called "Ratooi_Store_Usage.txt" in the main folder of your Ratooi data store.
Q. Does Ratooi use the Windows Registry? Can I install and uninstall it easily?
A. Ratooi does not used the Registry which means Ratooi can be installed and used without Administrator access. To install, just download the program and run the wizard. It can be uninstalled by going to c:\ratooi folder, then double clicking 'remove.bat'.
Q. How do I share a file?
A. There are three ways to do it.
1) For read only access and download, just drag it to your "web" folder and email the
other party the link (see RatooiWeb below for the link syntax)
2) For secure read/write access to your share files and folders, tell the other party your
email address and password and they can download the Ratooi program and access your account.
3) For read/write access without requiring a program download, tell the other party your
email address and passwrod and they can go to ratooi.com and connect to your account.
Ratooi
Q. Using Ratooi, I get a warning message saying that more than one file was
opened in an application and that I should save it on the desktop and copy/drag it to "Ratooi".
A. If you open more than one document of the same type from Ratooi you will get
a warning message. The message will tell you that when you save those documents, you will
need to save them locally, then drag/copy them back to your Ratooi window.
If you expect to work with more than one type of document at a time, the best practice is to
drag/copy it to your local computer and work on it. Then you can just drag/copy it back when
you finish. If you use Rdrive, you don't need to do this since Rdrive automatically mirrors
changed files back to your Ratooi data store.
Q. I tried to open another Ratooi folder and get an error
message saying "Can not initialize SFTP protocol...Connection has been
closed".
A. You have exceeded the simultaneous login limit of your RatooiSolo account. If this was the first time you tried connecting to your Ratooi data store from this computer, you may have another computer that is still connected. Disconnect that computer from your Ratooi data store and you will be able to connect. If you need more simultaneous connections to your Ratooi data store, you can upgrade to a VPN/Group account.
Q. I am trying to connect using a proxy and Ratooi. Where do I enter the proxy
information?
A. On the main screen, click 'Advanced'. Then click "Proxy" on the bottom left.
RatooiFTP
Q. How do I clean up after RatooiFTP when using a public computer terminal?
A. If you connect from a public terminal or computer, make sure that you go to “My Network
Places” on that computer and delete this Ratooi account after you are finished. You should
also delete the history from the browser. For Internet Explorer, you do this by selecting
“Tools” then “Internet Options” then “Clear History".
Q. What ports are required for RatooiFTP?
A. RatooiFTP uses FTP ports 20 and 21.
Q. I tried to open a RatooiFTP session and get an error
message saying "Could not login to the FTP server...".
A. You have exceeded the simultaneous login limit of your RatooiSolo account. You can close a
"Ratooi" window or other RatooiFTP windows and try again in a few minutes. If you need
more simultaneous connections to your Ratooi data store, you can upgrade to
a VPN/Group account.
Q. After I visit the "web" folder then go back to my root folder I can't open documents.
A. Window's Explorer has a bug when following links. To avoid this problem, do not click the "_Back" folder when you are in your "web" folder. Instead, use the "Up folder" button on the browser menu bar to get back to your root folder.
Q. When using Mozilla or Netscape, I can't upload?
A. When you get the connect link, copy the link to Windows Explorer (the file manager) and press enter. You
will then be able to upload.
RatooiBackup
Q. Backups don't take very long. Why?
A. RatooiBackup only backs up files that have changed since the last backup. This saves your
bandwidth and yet gives you a complete snapshot of your system.
Q. When I click a folder to backup, the wrong one seems to be selected?
A. You need to double click the desired folder, which puts you into that directory, then
click the red check icon.
Q. I want to make a permanent archival copy of a backup. How do I do it?
A. Just connect using 'Ratooi' and rename the 'Backup_FldrX' to another name.
That way, the folder will not be overwritten by the next schedule backup.
RatooiWeb
Q. How do I share my data, webpage, files, etcetera?
A. Copy your files into the "webshare" folder on your Remote data store using Ratooi or RatooiFTP. Then email the web link as follows.
Where r6 is the DNSid that you were given when you signed up.
And where R52000 is your Ratooi username / account number.
When they click the link, they will be able to view/open the files.
(Both are shown on the top of the Ratooi program window and are on the page your
received when you signed up.)
Q. I don't want to see the file listing. How do I make it go away?
A. Create a file in the web folder called "index.htm". This file can be an HTML file and
will be loaded as the first page when anyone goes to your website. It can reference links to
other HTML pages or folders in your web directory.
Q. Can someone viewing my website get to my other data?
A. No. Any attempt to access data in any folder will fail.
Q. An image file in an html page doesn't load. When I try to view the image itself it says
file not found but it is in my web folder.
A. This is because the RatooiWeb server is case sensitive to filenames. Make sure that if
you reference a file called "image.jpg" that the file is named that way on RatooiWeb and NOT
"image.JPG" (note upper case JPG).
Q. Can I setup a dynamic site using perl/php/python/etcetera?
A. RatooiWeb does not presently support server side dynamic or cgi scripting. However, you
may use Java or Javascript to provide dynamic content.
Q. Can I restrict access to a folder on my website to particular users?
A. Yes. Any folder in your RatooiWeb site can be access controlled. See the user's manual for details and an example of how to do it.
Rdrive
Q. Where are my Rdrive files stored on the remote Ratooi data store?
A. They are located in a folder called "My_Rdrive_files_on_PCNAME" where PCNAME is your
computer name.
Q. My computer crashed and my data is gone. How do I restore it?
A. After you get windows reinstalled, go to www.ratooi.com/support.htm and click "download
Ratooi again". You will need to enter your email address or account number and your
password. Then follow the instructions to download the program suite. Start Rdrive, select
"Advanced" then, "two-way mirroring for RatooiSolo". Enter the name of the computer or the
remote folder to restore, then connect. Rdrive will begin restoring your data.
Once the data is restored, you can change mirroring back to one-way.
Q. How do I share my Rdrive files located on my Ratooi store with someone else.
A. There are three ways. If you want a secure sharing environment, you can download the
Ratooi program suite on the other computer as discussed above. If you want quick access
without downloading anything, you can connect using RatooiFTP by going to www.ratooi.com and
entering your account information. The third way is to just move the documents to the "web"
folder on 'Ratooi Remote' and give the user the web page address. See the RatooiWeb
section for more information.
Q. What is the difference between one-way and two-way mirroring?
A. Rdrive supports three major mirroring shemes as described below.
1. One-way mirroring:
In most cases, the default option of one-way mirroring is preferred. With this option,
changes made to your Rdrive are reflected on your remote Ratooi data store. The files are
stored in a folder on the remote store called "My_R-drive_files_on_PCNAME" where PCNAME is
the name of your computer.
2. Two-way mirroring:
There are occasions when you may wish to perform two-way mirroring. This allows duplication
of files between the local Rdrive and the Ratooi store. This would be useful in the
following instances:
a. After a reinstall of windows to rebuild your local Rdrive from your Ratooi store. Note that
the computer must have the same name as before. If you do not remember what it was, you can
start “Ratooi” and look at the PCNAME on the My_R-drive_files folder.
b. If you have multiple computers upon which you work frequently and want them both to have the
same versions of data files on their Rdrives. In this case, you set the second computer to
use the PC Name of the first computer. In this case, both computers should be configured for
two-way mirroring so that changes by either computer will be updated to the other.
Two-way mirroring affects the way file deletions occur. If a file is deleted only on the
R-drive, it will appear to be deleted, but at the next mirror update, it will be transferred
back to the Rdrive. When two-way mirroring is used, delete both the Rdrive files and the
file on the remote Ratooi store.
3. Ratooi Rdrive Group/VPN two-way mirroring:
This option is for RatooiGroup customers. It allows multiple PCs to share Rdrive files.
This provides a transparent, secure network file sharing environment. An additional
advantage is that multiple copies of the file system exist on each computer so that should
the network go down, or a remote computer become lost, the data is still available on the
Ratooi store and on the other PC Rdrives. Group two-way mirroring deletions are impacted the
same way as previously described for two-way solo mirroring.
Q. What ports does Rdrive use?
A. Rdrive uses port 443 by default but can also use port 22.
Q. I see an error message saying “Host Not Found” and can not connect.
A. To connect you can try to change to the alternate port. To change the port number, open
c:\ratooi\port.txt and change “443” to “22” and save the file. Then try to reconnect with
Rdrive.
Q. I tried both port 443 and 22 and can not connect.
A. If the connect still fails you will not be able to use Rdrive, but can still use
“Ratooi” with the “Proxy” connect option. When the login window starts, click
“Advanced” and go to the proxy screen. Enter the data as given you by your system
administrator and click “save”. Then go to the session screen and enter the hostname, Ratooi
username and password and click “login”.
Q. I work on Rdrive and when I connected from another computer the latest edition of my files
are not on my Ratooi Store. What is happening?
A. Rdrive mirroring occurs at user selected intervals. If you turn off your computer
immediately after changing a file, Rdrive mirroring may not have had a chance to mirror the
file. It is recommended that you update your mirror before closing your Rdrive session so
that any changed data is transferred to your Ratooi store account. Simply click on the Rdrive
Mirror window and then click “Update mirror now”. When the mirroring window in the Task bar
closes, you can close your Rdrive session and turn off your computer knowing that all changes
have been reflected to your remote Ratooi data store.
